During this backup, there was an input/output error on 1 file (a game save). There weren't a whole lot of differences since, but since the only option at this point was to erase and start over I decided to make a backup of my home directory. My last Time Machine backup was from a few weeks back. I tried making an image of the partition, but it quickly ended in error a few hundred megabytes in apparently due to problems reading the SSD. When I tried to repair the SSD, Disk Utility ran briefly then told me that the disk was unrecoverable, I should salvage all data possible, and erase the disk and start over. But the "verify" and "repair" buttons were not greyed out for the SSD itself. I verified the partition and was told there were errors, but the "repair" button was greyed out. I verified the disk using Disk Utility, and it ultimately said the disk had problems that Disk Utility could not fix. Things I already have done: zapped the PRAM, reset the SMC, booting with shift key ("safe mode"), among others.īut I booted into the recovery partition (hold Command-R at startup), and it did not shut down during startup. From then on out, the progress bar would get to about 35% when booting, and the machine would suddenly turn off when I reached that point. Today I had to shut it off when it crashed. It was purchased refurbished direct from Apple a couple of months ago, and has seen light use since. I have a 2014 MacBook Air 11" with a stock 128GB SSD.
